Character Analysis

   Pip
Pirrip Philip , also known as Pip, is the protagonist and the narrator in the novel, Great Expectations. Pip was brought up by his sister and his brother-in-law Joe in the marsh country. Joe, being a blacksmith, doesn’t make much money and so Pip lives in a very low social class. His Uncle Pumblechook sets him up to meet a lady named Miss Havisham and her adopted daughter Estella, who later influences Pip into being ashamed of his social class. While Pip is fighting to get out of the lower class, he struggles with respecting his brother-in-law Joe whom he has depended on for his whole life. He sets, as it states in the title of the novel, great expectations for him. After a long journey, Pip comes to the realization that he should just be content with the life he had.
