Charles Dickens
Charles Dickens was born February 7, 1812 at Landport in Portsmouth, England. He had 7 other brothers and sisters. His parents were John and Elizabeth Dickens. When Charles was young, he spent most of his time outdoors or reading. He had a near-photographic memory of people and events, which he used in his writing. The Dickens family faced financial issues forcing them to move to Camden Town in London. His father continued to live beyond his means and was eventually imprisoned. The rest of his family joined John Dickens in prison, except for Charles. Charles thought that imprisoning his father was unfair and so he began to write about the unfairness of life. Once his father was released from prison, he started to go to school again and when he turned 24 his writing career started to take off. Many of his works were published serially in monthly installments. The novel Great Expectations was written serial from December 1860 through August 1861.
